Abstract |
The author outlines the history of the first YMCA in North America, established in Montreal in 1851. The YMCA movement was founded in 1844 by George Williams in London, England, to assist young workers during the Industrial Revolution. The Montreal YMCA opened the city's first public library in 1854. In the early 1900, the Montreal Y began offering adult night courses for working people. This led to the creation of Sir George Williams University, which later merged with Loyola College to become Concordia University.
