Grosse Ile: Gateway to Canada 1832-1937
Abstract
Grosse Île, an island downstream from Quebec City, served as a quarantine station for over a century. It is mostly associated with "les immigrants irlandais", victims of the potato famine in Ireland in the 1840s who fled to North America in search of a better life but who died of "ship fever" (typhus) on Grosse Île. Thousands of Irish are buried on the island. The island is now a National Historic Site. This book also contains a list of 619 children whose parents died on Grosse Île in 1847, and the names of the families who adopted them.
