The Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning: A Examination of its Educational Agenda in Lower Canada, 1818-1833
|
Abstract |
An examination of the role of Anglican ministers in the development and implementation of the Royal Institution’s rules and regulations. The author argues that between 1818 and 1833, the trustees of the Royal Institution, who were members of the Quebec Diocesan Committee of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, attempted to use the Royal Institution schools to achieve two objectives: dissemination of SPCK books and tracts; and diffusion of a monitoring instructional method known as the “Madras System.” These objectives supported the Quebec Diocesan Committee’s larger goal to proselytize and gain adherents to the Church of England from among the non-religious and from other Protestant sects in Lower Canada.
