Race Regeneration and Social Purity. A Study of the Social Attitudes of Canada's English-Speaking Suffragists
|
Abstract |
The author examines the two schools of thought within Canada's turn-of-the-twentieth-century middle-class, English-speaking suffragist movement towards society reform : those who promoted improving the living and working conditions of the poor (environmentalists), and those who promoted breeding-out the feeble-minded lower classes (eugenicists). The author includes information on English Montrealers' participation in these discussions, including those belonging to the Montreal Suffrage Association.
