Re-Thinking Rites of Passage in Contemporary Double-Ring Ceremonies in Montreal Jewish Weddings
|
Abstract |
A study of contemporary Montreal Jewish wedding rituals. The author focuses on the change from one to two wedding rings within the context of several Jewish weddings in Reform, Orthodox, Conservative and Reconstructionist denominations. Double ring wedding ceremonies present a conundrum in Judaism since Jewish law does not acknowledge the bride's giving of a second ring to the groom as a legal "kinyan". On the other hand, the practice exists.
