Title
John Stephenson, Founder of McGill Medical College - The First Cleft Palate Patient of Dr. Philibert Roux
Abstract
John Stephenson (1797-1843) established Montreal’s Medical Institution in 1822 to train prospective doctors. The Medical Institution became part of McGill University in 1829. Born in Montreal, Stephenson received his medical training at the Edinburgh Medical College, graduating in 1820. He wrote his graduating thesis in Latin. When the thesis was translated into English in 1963, it became known that Stephenson was born with a cleft of soft palate. In 1819, he was operated on in Paris by Dr. Philibert Roux (1780-1854) who repaired the congenital defect. This enabled Stephenson to attain normal speech and become a distinguished lecturer in Anatomy, Surgery and Obstetrics at McGill.
