Title
Montreal Memories of the Century from the Sketchbooks of John Collins
Abstract
For over forty years, John Collins (1917-2007) was the editorial cartoonist for Montreal's The Gazette newspaper. Collins studied Fine Arts at Montreal's Sir George Williams University (now part of Concordia University). In 1939, while he was a student, Collins sold his first cartoon to The Gazette, and two years later joined the newspaper as its first official cartoonist, a post he held for 37 years, until 1973. One of Collins' favourite cartoon characters was "Uno Who," a figure wearing a barrel and a bowler hat too large for his head, who personified the average taxpayer, so robbed by government of even his clothes that he was forced to wear a barrel.
