Abstract |
The Ontario-born Edward Wentworth Beatty (1878-1943), a lawyer by training, was named general counsel of the Montreal-based Canadian Pacific Railway in 1913 and became the first Canadian-born president of the company in 1918. He is credited with modernizing the railway company. Beatty served as chancellor of McGill University from 1920 until his death in 1943. He was also a member of the Corporation of Bishop's University, and a supporter of Martha Allan's Montreal Repertory Theatre.
