The Indomitable Spirit of Berne and Cohen: 'If You Can't Do It One Way, Try Another'
|
Abstract |
The author offers an appreciation of two men from Montreal, Eric Berne (1910-1970) and Leonard Cohen (1934-2016), whose insistence on remaining anti-establishment and offbeat continues to inspire many. The McGill-educated Berne was a psychiatrist best known as the creator of transactional analysis and the author of the book, Games People Play. According to the author, a comment regularly heard in the worldwide transactional analysis community is that transactional analysts are living out Berne's script of remaining on the fringe, not taken quite as seriously as one might wish. The author invites readers to broaden this perception and challenges the pathological underpinnings suggested by that idea.
