De la nutrition des pauvres malades : l’histoire du Montreal Diet Dispensary de 1910 à 1940

Abstract |
For social reformers involved in the public health movement at the turn of the twentieth century, there was a strong belief that educating the poor and immigrant populations in day-to-day cleanliness and better nutrition, clothing and housing would contribute to a prosperous nation. In Quebec, the Montreal Diet Dispensary, founded in 1879 by English-speaking Protestant women volunteers, became a practical laboratory for social action and intervention, aided by new female professionals (social workers, dietitians and nurses). The author argues that studying the Montreal Diet Dispensary reveals the definitive role of women in constructing a field of activity, intervention and service that eventually became a powerful lever for state and public intervention in this field.
