| Abstract |
The author takes a critical look at some of the assumptions commonly made about adolescence, and particularly about adolescent friendships. Her conclusions are based on interviews with some forty students, mainly girls, in Secondary V at Montreal's Royal Haven High School. The author argues that our society believes that teenage friendships are transitory or "terminal," and that this view of their friendships has strongly influenced our view of adolescence.
