| Abstract |
The Cornwall-Ontario born Mary Agnes Mack (1899-1978) was sent by her parents to finish her education (she had earlier been home-schooled by a private tutor) at Miss Edgar's and Miss Cramp's boarding school on Guy Street in Montreal. She attended the school from 1914 to 1918, from the time she was 15 to 19 years of age. The author, who is writing a biography of Mary Agnes Mack who went on to become the first female alderman of Cornwall, recounts Mary Agnes' life in Montreal from letters she wrote home to her parents during the years she attended the school. After her graduation from Miss Edgar's and Miss Cramp's, Mary Agnes Mack remained in Montreal through the 1920s, and, according to the author, studied art at the Art Institute of Montreal (better known as the Art Association of Montreal and later, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts). She returned to Cornwall in 1930.
