Cataraqui : histoire d’une villa anglaise à Sillery
|
Abstract |
The villa was designed by architect Edward Staveley (1795-1872) for Henry Burstall, who bought Domaine Cataraqui in 1850 from his uncle, James B. Forsyth, the property’s original owner. The Domaine Cataraqui is noted for its gardens, which were started by Burstall, but which were improved following the purchase of the estate by the Rhodes family in 1905. The biggest changes to the gardens happened after 1935 following the acquisition of the estate by Henry Percyvall Tudor-Hart and his wife, Catherine Rhodes. Under the Tudor-Hart family, Domaine Cataraqui became a center for the arts and the literati of Quebec City. The Domaine Cataraqui is now in the care of the Ministère de la Culture et de Communications.
