La motorisation ou ‘la rançon du progrès’ : tramways, véhicules-moteurs et circulation (Montréal, 1900-1930)
Abstract
A study of the conflicts over the sharing of Montreal streets between motorcars and tramways during the first three decades of the twentieth century. At the turn-of-the-century, tramways had a priority in traffic, and Montreal’s governing elite was divided between those who promoted the monopoly-held tramway system as the most efficient mode of public transportation, and those who promoted the motor vehicle. Traffic problems multiplied with motorization, leading to an increase in the police force and the establishment of numerous organizations dedicated to traffic management.
