Abstract |
An urban study of Montreal during the period when English-speaking residents of the city were in the majority. The author includes an account of Montreal's industrial transformation, of the English-speaking entrepreneurs who brought it about, of the role of Montreal as the metropolis of Canada, of the social, religious, cultural and educational institutions of the English-speaking community, and of the prominent Montrealers who took part in the civic administration of the city.
