Education and Ethnic Minorities in Canada: South Asian Students in Quebec Schools
|
Abstract |
The author examined the social and cultural issues which minority students are facing in Quebec high schools. Using the cyclical model of race relations, he charted out the route through which minority students tread ·from racial antagonism and accommodation to acculturation in order to adjust into the larger society. The author explains that an important aspect of his study was to examine the factors contributing to racial tension in schools and how socio-political discourse of Quebec perpetuates social differentiation. In analyzing issues related to racism, the opinions of 22 South Asian students were examined. The author also analyzed the process of acculturation and its impact on South Asian students' relation with their heritage culture. Hence, the author’s study aimed to discover underlying patterns in the social development of minority students.
