Abstract |
Francis Valentine Cuthbert Shortis (1875-1941), the son of a wealthy Irish cattle merchant, emigrated to Montreal in 1893. Two years later, in 1895, he was convicted of the murder of two men at the Montreal Cotton Company factory in Valleyfield, Quebec, during a botched robbery. His trial was the longest and most sensational in an epoch of long, lurid, sensational trials. Sentenced to be hanged, Governor General Lord Aberdeen commuted Shortis’s death sentence to life imprisonment. Shortis spent 42 years in prisons and mental hospitals and was released in 1937 -- at the time Canada's longest serving prisoner.
