Liberalism in Lower Canada, 1774-1815
|
Abstract |
The author argues that French Canadians at the turn of the nineteenth century combined elements of thinking drawn from the Ancien régime, the Enlightenment and British writers and statesmen to devise an idea of community which reflected Lower Canada's bicultural and bilingual nature, and articulated the nature of the colony's newly acquired parliamentary institutions.
