Abstract |
Highlights the contribution of laywomen teachers to the education of Montreal’s youth, girls and boys, in the first decades of the nineteenth century. Most of these teachers were Anglophones who owned small, esentially private schools. The author notes that teaching became for several of them a fulfilling career, a profitable profession that they exercised with a diversified clientele within a framework of total or relative autonomy. She points out that their efforts provided schooling for a large number of children and enabled girls to continue their education beyond the primary level, well before the State took the initiative in public instruction in both urban and rural areas.
