An Investigation into the Effect of a French Immersion Program on the Acquisition of English Language Arts
|
Abstract |
The author investigated the effect of a French Immersion program at Grade 6 on the English Language Arts acquisitions on students. Her study was effected with 88 matched pairs of pupils, one proceeding to French Immersion and the other to a regular (non-French Immersion) program. Matching was based on IQ, socio-economic level (father's occupation), and average mark at the end of Grade 5. The sample was drawn from a Grade 5 population of 751 pupils. Using the Canadian Tests of Basic Skills (Language portion) in Grades 5 and 6 and measured against Grade 7 marks, the author found that the year of French Immersion had not adversely affected the English Language Arts acquisitions of the French Immersion group.
