Abstract |
At the end of the nineteenth century, Henry Howard appeared as the first Quebec "alienist" (i.e. psychiatrist) to attempt to develop an inclusive theoretical treatise on the question of madness. Howard tried, from the perspective of the theory which he developed, to apply his theory to the major discussions affecting Quebec during this period: ultramontanism, the question of universal compulsory education, and public morality, as well as to the legal debate over the use of the insanity plea in court.
