Abstract |
Anne Leydet of the Stanstead Historical Society outlines the founding histories of the Eastern Townships towns of Ways Mills and Barnston, including the story of nineteenth century resident Harry Hollister (1805-1857) and his role in counterfeiting American paper money and coins in Barnston. In 1848, Hollister was arrested and charged with counterfeiting, but at trial the courts concluded that his machinery was not designed exclusively for counterfeiting and was used by machinists for lawful purposes, and since Hollister was by trade a machinist, he was found not guilty. Hollister is buried in the Ways Mills Cemetery.
