Abstract |
The Scottish-born businessman Adam Ferrie (1777-1863) immigrated to Montreal in 1829 after a successful but turbulent business life in Glasgow. In Montreal he began business in dry goods, hardware, groceries, and stationery, later opening branches run by his sons in Upper Canada. An outspoken political reformer in Scotland, in Lower Canada Ferrie counselled firm but balanced loyalism. He opposed both the radical Patriotes and Doric Club in the 1830s and 1840s, and the "pretended liberals" Hincks and Lafontaine in the 1850s. He helped organize Montreal's Board of Trade in 1842, sat on the city's municipal council from 1840 to 1843, and was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1843. He was involved in several philanthropic undertakings in Montreal, including helping cholera-stricken immigrants in 1832 and 1834, heading the committee managing the Montreal Public Bakery from 1837 to 1840, and a woodyard where the poor could purchase fuel at reasonable prices. He retired to Hamilton in 1853 to be closer to his children.
