Events That Might Otherwise Be Lost: Henry Joseph Martin and his Private Journal
|
Abstract |
Henry Joseph Martin (1828-1885), born and raised in Stanstead, Quebec, was a land surveyor and draftsman in the Eastern Townships before moving in 1861 to the United States. While in the States, he maintained close ties to the place of his birth, including serving as master of the Golden Rule Masonic Lodge. The author notes that Martin was a meticulous record-keeper, and his "Private Journal" details everything from the weather to local disasters and political events of regional or international significance. The author copies excerpts from Martin's 1859 journal entries, where the main event during this time was the ongoing battle between local Temperance crusaders and those (like Martin) who saw no moral dilemma in the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages.
