Abstract |
Officially launched in May of 1914, Montreal's "Yidishe-folks-biblyotek" consolidated the small pre-existing Jewish libraries in the city and provided a meeting place for local readers and writers alike. Although the Folks-biblyotek was not the first library of Jewish books to be established in Montreal, it became the first “folks,” or "people’s," library created to serve the public at large rather than catering to a small group of individuals of shared ideological convictions.
