Title
Aldis Bernard : Montreal's Dentist Mayor
Abstract
The Eastern Townships-born Aldis Bernard (c. 1810-1876), whose parents may have been American Loyalist, was educated in the United States when his parents moved back to that country. He was educated in dentistry at Philadelphia, and practiced in the southern United States as an itinerant dentist, moving to Montreal in 1841. The author outlines the numerous organizations Bernard belonged to in Montreal, as well as serving as a Montreal city councillor from 1858 to 1861, and from 1866 to 1873, and as Montreal's mayor from 1873 to 1875. During his tenure as mayor, twelve areas were secured by the city for municipal parks, including Mount Royal Park, Lafontaine Park, Dominion Square and St. Helen's Island. Montreal's charter was also modified during his tenure to give the city more powers regulating public health.
