Abstract
Bella Hall Gauld (1878-1961), labour educator and political activist, was hired in 1914 as the first director of the Montreal University Settlement House. In 1920, she established the Labour College in Montreal. On its demise in 1924, she worked for the Women's Labour League, which sponsored camps for poor children. Gauld joined the Communist Party of Canada in 1922, serving as president of the Montreal branch of the Friends of the Soviet Union from 1926 to 1939. She remained active in the Communist Party until her death.
