Abstract |
Information on the early life of Thomas Walker, written by one of his collateral descendants. The British-born Walker emigrated to Boston in 1752 and moved to Montreal in 1763, where he became a spokesperson for the city's English-speaking merchants in their dispute with the town's British military authorities and with the colonial administrators. On December 6, 1764, Walker was attacked by members of the British military garrison and had his ear cut off. The incident nearly divided the English-speaking members of the colony into armed camps and eventually led to the recall of Quebec's first British governor, James Murray.
