Dynamics of Ethnic Associational Culture in a Nineteenth Century City: Saint Patrick’s Society of Montreal, 1834-56

Abstract |
The author explores the history of Montreal’s Saint Patrick’s Society from its foundation in 1834 to its reconstitution in 1856. He highlights the political origins of the Society, its links with other national societies in Montreal and its role in Constitutionalist politics in the 1830s. The impact of the social climate that emerged in Lower Canada in the period following the Rebellions had important consequences for Saint Patrick’s Society and the wider structure of associational culture in mid-nineteenth century Montreal. The author explores these developments, and the emergence of divisions that led to the institutional realignment of the Society as an organ under clerical aegis.
