Abstract
A study of a painting done by Cornelius Krieghoff (1815-1872) of members of the Montreal Shakspeare [sic] Club, painted in 1847. The Shakspeare Club was founded in 1843 and met regularly for the next six years. According to its Constitution, the club was formed "for the purpose of cultivating a taste for elegant literature amongst such gentlemen as may be balloted into the society." Identified by the author as being in the painting are John Young (1811-1878), Frederick W. Torrance, Edmund Allen Meredith (1817-1899), Sir Allan Napier MacNab (1798-1862), Dr. A. Staunton and John Budden (1826-1918). Two figures remain unidentified.
