Abstract |
An account of anti-Semitic and pro-fascist/Nazi organizations in Canada during the 1930s. The author argues that Quebec was "the most fertile soil for anti-Semitism" in the country. He recounts the anti-Semitic work of Quebec's Parti National Social Chretien and its leader, Adrien Arcand, who fancied himself the "Führer" of Canadian fascism. The author also describes other organizations and movements of the period, including "Achat Chez Nous" which called for an economic boycott by Francophones directed against Protestant and Jewish merchants in the province. This movement was endorsed by the St. Jean Baptiste Society, Catholic unions and other influential organizations.
