Abstract |
An examination of how the Charter of the French Language has fit into the "Outaouais reality" five years after Bill 101 was passed. The authors give an overview of the demolinguistic and cultural situation in the Outaouais, circa 1982, examining how adults and youth, both Francophones and Anglophones, live their daily lives linguistically and culturally. In Hull, they found, 63 percent of non-Francophones only know English while 49 percent of Francophones only know French. The authors also point out that while the Cégep de Hull receives only half of its potential Francophone clientele (who apparently skip CEGEP in Quebec and go direvtly to university in Ottawa), they also point out that the ever-increasing number of English-speaking students at Cégep de Hull raises a problem for the future of this French-language school.
