Abstract |
James Pattison Cockburn (1779-1847), artist, author and a lieutenant-colonel and commander of the Royal Artillery Regiment, was stationed in Quebec from 1822 to 1823 and from 1826 to at least 1832. Many of his drawings and watercolours are considered important as pictorial records of life in early Canada. In 1831 he published a travel book titled Quebec and Its Environs. In 1978, the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Queen's University, Kingston, held an exhibition on James Cockburn's art, curated by the author. She and Michael Bell co-authored the Introduction to this book accompanying the exhibition. The book Incorporates Cockburn's "Quebec and its Environs."
