Courage, Sacrifice and Betrayal: The Story of the Victoria Rifles of Canada, 60th Battalion, in the First World War
Abstract
The Victoria Rifles of Canada was an infantry regiment that originated in Montreal in 1862. During the First World War, the 60th Battalion was authorized on April 20, 1915, embarked for Great Britain on November 4, 1915, and arrived in France on February 21, 1916. The author provides a detailed account of the day-to-day operations of the 60th Battalion and the lives of its many soldiers. Engagements of the Battalion include the Ypres Salient at Sanctuary Wood and Hill 60, and in the Somme at the Zollern Graben, and Regina trenches. The Battalion also fought at Thelus and La Chaudiere and at Vimy Ridge. After the Battle of Vimy Ridge, where the Battalion captured the villages of Vimy and Petit Vimy, the 60th Battalion was divided and sent as reinforcements to four other battalions.
