Abstract |
St. Patrick's Orphanage was founded in response to the desperate needs of the Irish immigrants who landed in Montreal during the Irish famine of 1847 and 1848. Thousands died of typhus, contracted on the "coffin ships" that carries them from Ireland, in the fever sheds at Windmill Point. The children who survived but lost both their parents were placed in the Orphanage for adoption.
