Title
Industry in Hull: Its Origins and Development, 1800-1961
Abstract
An examination of the evolution of industry in Hull, Quebec, and its influence on the development of the city over three time periods. The author focuses on the timber trade (1800-1845), established by American immigrant Philemon Wright and his family who were the fist Europeans to settle in the area; the era of the sawn lumber and the rise of related secondary manufacturing (1845-1890), under the leadership American-born E.B. Eddy; and the era of industrial development in the city (1890-1961), when hydro-electric development allowed for the introduction of pulp and paper manufacturing, along with slaughtering and meat packing, textile and clothing, and cement industries.
