Abstract
Alexander Caufield Anderson (1814-1884), a Hudson's Bay Company fur trader, spent his first year of service (1831) at the HBC post at Lachine, on the outskirts of Montreal. Anderson's autobiographical recollections of life as an apprentice-clerk at the Lachine post, written years later on his deathbed, describes a quiet, monotonous existence at Lachine, interspersed with the excitement of the arrival of the fur brigades and subsequent "banquet of baronial proportions."
