|
| Abstract |
In mid-nineteenth century Montreal, a significant number of industrial firms located on the urban fringe rather than the conventional city core. The author presents a case study of St. Ann, where the Lachine Canal acted as a powerful magnet attracting large-scale, technologically advanced industries to the ward. St. Ann ward was home to a large population of Irish Montrealers in the second half of the nineteenth century.
