Abstract
The Bank of Montreal, originally called the Montreal Bank (and today known as BMO), was founded in 1817, making it the oldest incorporated bank in Canada. The founders of the bank were a group of nine prominent city merchants, led by John Richardson. The author outlines a short history of the financial institution from its founding to 1987.
