Title
Catégories ethniques et linguistiques au Québec : quand compter est une question de survie
Abstract
The author brings together three fields of research which he claims are generally isolated from each other : (1) the history of immigration and ethnic diversity, (2)the history of Québécois nationalism, and (3) the political and ideological use of ethnic and linguistic categories in defining who is Québécois. He points out that in the case of Quebec, the political use of ethnic categories cannot be separated from the history of nationalism (or nationalisms) and of immigration. The author refers to the distinction between ethnic nationalism, based on the cultural idea of the nation, and civic nationalism, based on the notion of political community, in order to understand this history, and to suggest that ethnic and linguistic categories are closely associated with it, but in a specific manner.
