'Le Québec et ses trois langues' dans Un Jardin Entouré de Murailles de Robert Lalonde
|
Abstract |
An examination of Robert Lalonde's 2002 novel, Un Jardin Entouré de Murailles, and its debate on the linguistic future of Quebec. The author points out that the book's language-centred discussion focuses on French, English and "Québécois." The book's main character, "Marguerite Yourcenar", a standard-bearer of French who, travelling in Quebec, is confronted by - and confronts - the other two languages. The book strongly thematizes the debate as to which language should predominate in Quebec, and vigorously (albeit implicitly) favours one of them.
