Title
Reconstructing Jewish Identity in a Distinct Society: An Introduction to Lavy M. Becker of Montreal
Abstract
A study of the Reconstructionist Synagogue (Dorshei Emet -- Seekers of Truth) community in Montreal that Lavy M. Becker (1905-2001) founded in 1960. Becker functioned as the community's "honorary" (unpaid) rabbi in its first phase of development from to 1976. Reconstructionist Judaism espouses an ideal of Judaism as a progressively evolving civilization, a Judaism more expansive than what is usually defined as the religious domain. Becker served as president of the Federation of Reconstructionist Synagogues from 1969 to 1972, and as chairman of the Board of Overseers of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College from 1969 to 1974.
