Abstract
A study of the policy papers of the Parti Québécois and the Liberal Party of Quebec on sovereignty-association issued prior to the 1980 referendum, and statements by the political parties following the 1995 referendum, to determine attitudes towards the status of English-speaking residents of the province. The author argues that during this period a new politics emerged within the Anglophone community that sought to challenge the Québécois nationalist discourse.
