Abstract
The Mount Royal Club's history is closely tied to the social, economic and cultural development of Montreal at the turn of the twentieth century. The author outlines the Club's founding in 1899, the biographies of the founders, and discusses the cultural and social forces that played an important role in the selection of the American architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White to design the new clubhouse in 1904-1906. The author also looks at the painting collection of the club during this period.
