Faces of Revolution in the English Quebec Novel: A Study of Hugh MacLennan's Return of the Sphinx, Leonard Cohen's Beautiful Losers, and Scott Symons' Place d'Armes
Abstract
A study of the interpretation of Quebec's Quiet Revolution by three English Quebec novelists. According to the author, Hugh MacLennan portrays revolution as the inevitable outcome of the spiritual decay of modern civilization; Leonard Cohen sees revolution as the means to liberate the soul of man through spiritual, political sexual and psychological confrontation; and Scott Symon advocates revolution aimed at the renewal of sensibility against the American mentality adopted by the Canadian establishment.
