Title
The Application of Steam Navigation to the St. Lawrence, 1809-1840
Abstract
The author describes the financing, building and launching of steamships in Montreal, starting with John Molson's boat, the Accommodation, in 1809, followed by Molson's Swiftsure, launched in 1812, and his Malsham, launched in 1814. Molson's inability to secure a monopoly on inland navigation on the St. Lawrence resulted in other competing steamships being launched over the next thirty years. The author outlines Montreal's pioneering role in developing steam navigation on the St. Lawrence, a catalyst in the city's industrial revolution that made it the nineteenth-century manufacturing center of Canada.
