Comparison of Social-Economic Backgrounds of Vocational Students Taking Automobile Mechanics II in the French and English Sector on the Island of Montreal
Abstract
An examination of the students entering the vocational Automobile Mechanics II program in Montreal schools in the 1980s in terms of future employment expectations based on linguistic and socio-economic backgrounds. The author questioned forty Anglophone and fifty-one Francophone students from three Montreal area schools. The author found that the socio-economic background of the two groups was basically the same. Both groups chose vocational education as a route to employment. However, for financial reasons, the English-speaking students viewed their chosen field as permanent, while the French-speaking students believed to a greater degree that they would continue their education.
