The Scandal Makers : The Cogniacers, Part 3
|
Abstract |
The third and final episode of the author's account of the nineteenth-century bank note forgers, known as "cogniacers," of Missisquoi County, in Quebec's Eastern Townships. This episode deals with the story of Turner Wing (1768-1832) and his partner William Crane, who were in a bitter, twenty-year competition with the Gleeson family, neighbouring forgers on "Cogniac Street" (today part of Chemin Hudon) in Dunham Township. In 1824, an all-out war between the Gleeson and Wing gangs erupted on Cogniacer Street. Two armed battles between the gangs lefts the Gleeson gang as the victor. The Wing gang continued forging bank notes, but were from then on in a much smaller, and tolerated competition with the Gleeson gang. Turner Wing is buried in the Wing family cemetery on Chemin Hudon.
