Abstract
Igor Gouzenko was a cipher clerk in the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa when he defected in 1945 with 119 documents revealing Russian espionage activities in Canada. A Royal Commission was held in 1946 into the passing of nuclear secrets to the Soviets by Canadian public officials, academics and others in positions of trust. The author includes information on the reaction within McGill University to the Gouzenko Affair. Six of those arrested by the RCMP on espionage charges were McGill University science graduates, although only one was employed at the time by the school.
